I’m really excited to be in Shepton Mallet. I’ve been impressed with the friendliness of the locals; we’ve had lots of people popping in to our new shop to say hi and wish us well. This really is appreciated by myself and all the staff involved with Zen Shepton Mallet. The shop used to be called ‘Microchipz’, but they closed down earlier in the year and left the premises empty. When the landlord contacted us to see if we were interested in taking on the lease, we decided to go for it and open up our newest store in the lovely town of Shepton Mallet.
Several weeks of frantic preparations had begun! We focussed on the front of house: new carpet, lots of decor and a fabulous peace lily gifted to us from our excellent neighbours in Peppers Delicatessen across the road from Zen (you have to try their quiche, its to die for!). As the opening day grew closer we realised that the second half of the shop would have to wait. This is the area used for the workshop repairs and also has a small kitchenette and some office desks. The shop is large. It’s bigger than the Glastonbury shop and is split into two sections. In the front of house, you’ll find all our cables & connectors, computers and printers, disks and SSDs for sale. We also have a great range of laptop bags and accessories on display.
On the Saturday we opened on the 10th July, most of the staff gathered for drinks in the newly refurbished shop to celebrate our new Shepton venture. Come Monday 12th, we had done it! Shepton opened and we began trading. Much like the other mendip based Zen Computer Shops, we offer a wide range of technical services and advice. Shepton Mallet branch is often (though not always) staffed by Dave who is excellent at making customers feel comfortable when discussing IT topics in what can be a difficult experience for some of our older customers. We talk *plain english* and remain committed to sensible pricing.
Now in November we’re ready to tackle the ‘back office’ here in Shepton Zen and do a complete renovation on the whole area. This will enable us to bring in two members of staff on full time in the shop and perform more IT related support jobs from the back offices. Work starts on Thursday and we expect to fill the skip being delivered by Glastonbury Skip Hire to make room for our new workbenches and office equipment.
