Mechanical Hard drive upgrade to Solid State Disk
An old saying regarding IT provision went something like this, “Reliable, Fast, Cheap – choose two”. The point of course being that you’d have to spend a lot of dosh to make your system fast and reliable. With the advent of Solid State Disks (SSD) I think this saying is now truly outdated.
If your Windows laptop is a few years old, or even new from a budget range, you’ll probably find that the hard drive inside is mechanical. The hard drive is the component in your computer that stores data even when your computer is switched off. For many years mechanical hard drives were widely used in both Apple and PC computers. In most circumstances, the hard drive was the bottleneck; hard drives struggled to keep up with the numerous demands your computer put on them. More acutely, mechanical hard drives are prone to failure.
Some years ago the new SSD technology emerged. SSDs have a much faster read write speed than mechanical disks. Unlike mechanical disks, SSDs have no moving parts and are less prone to failure. Unfortunately, as with all new technology, SSDs came at a high price and only big businesses fitted them in their server computers. Nowadays, SSDs are affordable for most of us. A 120 Gigabyte SSD will set you back less than £50. Once the SSD is fitted in your machine it will feel much faster than when new. Start up times will dramatically speed up, your computer will be quieter and so much quicker in every way.
Some of the high end SSDs, only 20% or so more expensive than the average SSD now come with a 10 year manufacturers warranty! This will give you some peace of mind on just how much more reliable than a mechanical disk your new SSD will be. Not that you shouldn’t backup – backups are always a good idea; the possibility of having to use your backup is significantly reduced when you upgrade your computer with an SSD. SSDs represent the best way to inject a new lease of life in nearly all older computers. A worthwhile investment!
