Zen Workshops regularly undertake IT work to recover lost, deleted or otherwise unavailable files and folders from all manner of storage devices.
Whether the file was accidentally deleted then the recycle bin emptied or a disk fails and all seems lost, we can often save the date in full or in part, much to our customer’s satisfaction.
The broken USB data stick…
One recent case stands out. We checked in an unusual USB disk; unusual because it was in pieces! The USB plug had been snapped off.
Our customer had been saving rather a lot of work-related data on the USB disk before it was broken in two. So, the recovery being a success was quite pressured.
We set about the job and cleaned up both sides of the device. Now it was ready for soldering. Thin copper cables about 1cm in length were attached to the four points on the plug then the other end of these short cables were attached to the storage chip solder points.
Now the disk was recognisable on the host workbench computer but we have two more problems. First the chip was quite hot, so time was against us in the race for the data. Second, the disk file system appeared to be corrupted. So, the first move was to run CHKDSK then repair the file system with other command line tools.
After what was admittedly a nail-biting final scan / repair on the disk using our software tools, the disk popped up on our computer as readable. All the files and folders were intact and fully accessible. The disk had enough life left in it for the full data copy and one happy customer received all their data on a lovely new Kingston TM USB drive. We also printed out some helpful advice on how to backup USB disks automatically to the Cloud and gave this to our now relived customer.
